THEORY MEETS PRACTICE
What would our lives be like without clean drinking water? What do cities need to look like in order to remain livable during heavy rainfall and heat waves? Your commitment to urban water management is needed!
At DAHLEM, we offer exciting opportunities to start your career in water management construction. Whether you decide to train as a draughtsman or pursue a integrated degree in civil engineering, with us you will be part of the solution and experience real project work. And best of all, if it's a good fit, you can stay with us after your training or studies. Because you are our next generation!
Your Options
What does a draughtsman do?
As a draughtsman, you will mainly use a computer to create technical drawings, plans, and models that are essential for the implementation of construction projects. You will work closely with our engineers and ensure that plans are accurately and precisely put “on paper” within a project team.
Training as a draughtsman is a dual vocational training program. You will attend vocational school 1-2 days a week and spend the rest of your time learning practical skills at our office.
With us, you will learn about two of the three specializations available to architectural draftsmen. Few engineering firms offer this. After the first half of your training, you can specialize in civil engineering or underground, road, and landscape construction.
These are the tasks you can expect
- You will prepare construction and implementation drawings, e.g., formwork and reinforcement plans or location and shoring plans.
- You will create floor plans, views, and drainage details or terrain longitudinal and cross sections.
- You will work with a wide variety of 2D and 3D software, e.g., AutoCAD, Architecture, Revit, SOFICAD, SOFISTIK.
- You will learn about everyday practice through construction site internships at various construction companies.
We'll be a good match if...
- You are interested in technology and construction.
- You have good spatial awareness.
- You have a basic understanding of mathematics.
- You enjoy digital design and modeling.
- You are willing to learn new things every day.
- You have a technical college entrance qualification or a high school leaving certificate.
As part of DAHLEM...
- You will receive sound, practical training that will enable you to make a difference.
- Our experienced training team will support and encourage you and will also help you with vocational school subjects.
- You will have the opportunity to work on real projects, e.g., shaft construction and pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, and sewer planning.
- Our construction supervisors will regularly take you to our construction sites.
- We will discuss current training topics with your fellow trainees and trainers at our monthly Azubi-JourFix meetings.
- You can look forward to a modern workplace with a personal notebook computer and two large screens.
- We will offer you opportunities for further training during your apprenticeship, e.g., training courses on CAD software.
- We offer you opportunities for further training even after your apprenticeship, e.g., to become a technician or Bachelor Professional (construction engineering).
Training as a draughtsman is available at our locations in Essen, Darmstadt, and Wiesbaden. Applications for the upcoming training year 2026 will be accepted starting in December 2025. You can get to know us better in advance...

What is a integrated study program?
A dual study program combines the best of theory and practice. You study at Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences while gaining practical experience in our company. At the end of your studies, you will receive a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in civil engineering. Your practical semester and thesis will take place at our company with our support.
Our company is special: as a general planner, we have many disciplines in-house. With us, you will gain insight into all areas of construction, i.e., transportation, building physics, construction management, structural engineering, and water management. After graduation, you will be ready to choose a specialty and actively shape your career.
These benefits await you
- You will experience a steady alternation between theory at university and practical experience in the company, allowing you to directly apply what you have learned in real-world projects.
- Our training plan, which is coordinated with the university, allows you to explore all areas of professional life.
- You are financially independent thanks to a monthly stipend during your studies.
- Your semester fees are covered.
- After successfully completing your studies, you will have excellent career opportunities thanks to your practical experience and academic degree.
We are a good match if...
- You are interested in mathematics and natural sciences.
- You are fascinated by construction projects and technical contexts.
- You are willing to learn exciting new things every day in all areas of civil engineering.
- You want to get involved in project teams.
- You have a high school diploma or technical college entrance qualification.
As part of DAHLEM...
- From day one, you will be a full member of the entire team and gain insights into exciting and diverse projects.
- You will belong to a group of dual students from all years.
- You will receive technical and organizational support from experienced mentors.
- Our site managers will take you on site visits.
- You can turn plans into reality through construction site internships at various construction companies.
- You will gain expertise in a wide range of software.
