Short description
Municipal wastewater in the Leverkusen catchment area is currently treated mechanically at the association's own wastewater treatment plant in Leverkusen. Since the early 1970s, biological treatment has been carried out together with industrial wastewater from the Bayer AG plant in Leverkusen.
The Wupperverband is planning to build a separate nutrient-removing wastewater treatment plant with anaerobic sludge stabilization and gas utilization at the existing Leverkusen-Bürrig site. The new plant is to be built (partly) on the existing open space, with commissioning scheduled for 2032.
In addition to the minimum requirements for treatment performance in accordance with Annex 1 of the Waste Water Treatment Ordinance (AbfwV), the BIM project's objectives include improving effluent values to reduce wastewater discharge, P removal <0.5 mg/l, trace substance removal, reduction of multi-resistant germs, and resource recovery. The design is accompanied by ASM and CFD simulations.
