Short description

The new sewage sludge ordinance calls for a rethink in municipal water management. Against the backdrop of changes in the legal framework for waste and fertilizer legislation, changes in the current treatment and disposal of sewage sludge are also on the horizon.

The Kleve-Salmorth WWTP is considered a flagship project for innovative sewage sludge treatment. The conversion of the plant sets a benchmark in resource conservation at the municipal level. The future two-stage compact digestion process generates renewable energy from biogas.

The subsequent sewage sludge carbonization refines biomass and permanently avoids disposal bottlenecks. Upcycling turns sewage sludge from waste material back into a valuable resource.
